The address

On Great Peter Street, a few minutes south of Westminster Abbey and Parliament

This is the quiet, residential side of Westminster, a few streets of brick terraces and mansion blocks tucked behind the Abbey. Smith Square, with the baroque church of St John's at its centre, is two minutes away, and Lord North Street keeps its row of eighteenth-century houses almost unchanged. Parliament and the government departments of Whitehall are a short walk north.

Strutton Ground, at the western end of the street, has a weekday lunchtime market and a run of cafés and pubs. Westminster Abbey is four minutes from the door, Tate Britain on Millbank about eleven, and Victoria Tower Gardens runs along the Thames beside the House of Lords. St James's Park, with Buckingham Palace at its far end, is about twelve minutes' walk.

St James's Park station, on the District and Circle lines, and Westminster, which adds the Jubilee line, are both about eight minutes away. Victoria station, for the Victoria line and trains to Gatwick, is under twenty minutes on foot, and buses run along Millbank and Victoria Street across central London.
