Hell's Kitchen, also known as Clinton, runs down Manhattan's West Side from the Theatre District to the Hudson. West 54th Street lies in its quieter north-western corner, close to the river, with DeWitt Clinton Park's playgrounds and sports fields across Eleventh Avenue and Mount Sinai West hospital a few blocks away on Tenth Avenue.

Ninth Avenue is lined with restaurants, bakeries and bars from almost every cuisine, and Restaurant Row and the Broadway theatres are a little further south-east. Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle and the south-western corner of Central Park are each around a quarter of an hour on foot, and the Intrepid Museum, aboard an aircraft carrier at Pier 86, is about twelve minutes away.

The 50th Street station on Eighth Avenue serves the C and E lines, which run direct to Penn Station and the World Trade Center, and 59th Street–Columbus Circle adds the A, B, D and 1. Hudson River Park is seven minutes west, with a riverside path for walking, running and cycling down the length of Manhattan's West Side.
