A penthouse on the fifteenth and sixteenth floors, among the highest apartments in the building and built for a stay that has to work as well as impress. The kitchen is full sized and the dining area seats six, so a working week and a dinner both fit without rearranging the room.

The kitchen runs to granite counters, stainless steel Fisher Paykel appliances and a proper set of accessories. The bathroom is marble clad with glass mosaic accents, a Kohler high pressure shower and good bath amenities, and there are televisions in the living room and the bedroom with Apple TV, premium cable and international channels on request.

The detail is where the floor earns its name: custom furnishings in dark Macassar ebony, fine lacquers and velvet and leather upholstery, lighting chosen in Italy, rich hardwood through the foyer, living and dining areas, original framed photography on the walls, room darkening blinds and heating and cooling controlled apartment by apartment.

One of only two Sky Suites in the building, on the seventeenth floor behind a private key, and close to 1,500 square feet. The bedroom is the light filled room of the apartment, the furnishings are mid-century and deliberate rather than decorative, and the terrace wraps the whole suite.

That terrace is the reason to take it: a metal clad wood burning fireplace, somewhere to eat and somewhere to sit, and views in three directions over the city. Inside, the kitchen is concealed until it is wanted, with a Miele convection oven and microwave, a SubZero refrigerator and a Nespresso machine.

A work nook is hidden in the plan, with a laptop provided, and Samsung 4K televisions sit in the living room and the bedroom. The bathroom and powder room are clad in limestone, and the master bath carries a spa shower built for two, with both rain and steam.

The address

Between Fifth and Sixth, one block south of Central Park

West 58th Street is the quiet side of Midtown. Central Park begins a block north and Fifth Avenue runs a few doors east.

Marea and Estiatorio Milos are on Central Park South, Nobu Fifty Seven and Quality Meats within two blocks, and there is a cafe on the ground floor. Bergdorf Goodman is at the end of the street, with Tiffany, Louis Vuitton and the Fifth Avenue flagships beyond, and the shops at Columbus Circle a short walk west.

The Museum of Modern Art is seven minutes on foot, Carnegie Hall five and Lincoln Center sixteen. The park adds the zoo, Wollman Rink and the reservoir.

For guests here for treatment, Lenox Hill, Mount Sinai, the Hospital for Special Surgery and Memorial Sloan Kettering are a short ride east or north. The subway at 57th and 59th reaches the rest of Manhattan within twenty minutes.

The Central Park Suites sits on West 58th Street between Fifth and Sixth, one block south of Central Park and a few doors from Bergdorf Goodman. Six kinds of apartment share the building, so a single traveller, a family of four and a household staying a whole season can all live at the same address.

Studios start at about 30 square metres, with a king bed and a kitchen with a wet bar. One bedrooms run from 56 to 63 square metres, two bedrooms from 83 to 102 with two marble bathrooms. All have full kitchens with granite counters and stainless steel appliances, marble bathrooms with glass mosaic detailing and oversized windows.

The penthouse collection takes the fifteenth and sixteenth floors, in one and two bedroom versions, with gourmet kitchens, dining for six, Kohler showers and custom furnishings in Macassar ebony. On the seventeenth, behind a private key, are the two Sky Suites: close to 1,500 square feet each, with a wraparound terrace, a wood burning fireplace and views in three directions.

Downstairs are a fitness centre that never closes, a cafe for weekday breakfast, a resident lounge with two fireplaces and live music on Thursdays, an eleven seat cinema and a business centre with a board room for ten. Laundry is included, parking is on site and the front desk is staffed at every hour. Pets are welcome, and a sleep programme can be arranged on request.
